An international campaign in support of Nasrin Sotoudeh and all other women political prisoners
In Iran, all free-thinking humans are in danger of imprisonment on the grounds of “actions against the security of the Islamic Republic of Iran”. Artists, journalists, students, lawyers, women’s rights activists, even grieving mothers of executed political dissidents, are all considered suspicious and threats to the establishment. Many human rights and pro-democracy activists are in prison and still others, in fear of being unlawfully arrested, have escaped and emigrated out of the country.
The Islamic Republic does not refrain from any kind of physical or psychological torture against political prisoners. Several female political prisoners, including Nasrin Sotoudeh, an attorney and a human rights activist, are currently on hunger strike in protest to the ongoing psychological torture in Iranian prisons.
Throughout the world, visiting privileges are among the basic rights for prisoners. Meanwhile, in Iran, many political prisoners are deprived of visits from their immediate family members. In Nasrin Sotoudeh’s case, she is prevented from seeing her husband and children, which is an additional mental torment for her. Nasrin is not alone. There are many women and men who face unjust incarceration and mistreatment every day. The law mandates that prisoners, under any kind of indictment, must have the liberty to acquire an attorney and the right to have visitors. Under no circumstances should prisoners be kept in solitary confinement. At present, despite Nasrin’s deteriorating health due to her hunger strike, she has been taken directly from hospital into solidarity confinement. This is not only against the law, but is also a clear indication of the violation of fundamental human rights in Iran.
Many international organizations and governments have expressed their protest to the Islamic Republic’s blatant violation of human rights. We can and should inform the freedom loving people of the world about such grave maltreatment of the imprisoned human rights activists. On November 10th, we ask of all Iranians abroad, and all advocators of peace and human rights around the world to support the struggles undertaken by the women activists of Iran. Together, let’s demand the release of all prisoners of conscience in Iran.
On November 10th, let’s support Nasrin and all other political prisoners in their struggle for freedom and collectively herald our voices of protest against political repression in Iran.
